A French poet created a story, in which Bacchus, the god of drunkenness was pursuing a maiden named Amethyste. She refused his attentions and fled. She prayed to the Gods to remain chaste and the Goddess Diana answered her prayer by turning her into a white stone. Humbled, Bacchus poured his wine over the stones, dying them purple. Amethyst has been used by the ancient Greeks and Romans to denote royalty and high class. The lush purple color was the color of the Gods and they used the stone in jewelry and ceremonial decoration. Archaeologists have found amethysts in roman digs, as well as European church sites.
Amethyst has a history of pointing towards the Divine. It encourages selflessness, as well as wisdom. Often the user of this stone is leveraging the strength of the stone’s innate abilities to help find truth in a certain situation or truth about a certain person. Most often amethyst is connected to the third eye chakra and can be used to open one’s awareness of the world around them.
Because of its innate ability and potency towards the divine, it is also useful against nightmares and insomnia. Placing it at the bedside without other stones in the way may allow the amethyst to protect the sleeper from negative energies and allow a restful restorative sleep for the coming day. It is known to be a natural tranquilizer, blocking stress from the user. Many believe amethyst can be used to ease the pain of loss of a loved one, due to its harmonizing link of the physical, mental, and spiritual bodies.
